3 Signs It’s Time to Replace Windshield Wipers

With the recent rain spell in the Chicagoland area, you’ve probably been using your windshield wipers more than usual. Your wipers are essential for safe driving during inclement weather, so here are a few signs that you may need to replace them.

1. Streaks on the glass

If you notice streaks left on the glass after using your wipers, it’s time to get them replaced. Wiper blades are supposed to press evenly on the glass when they are being used. Worn blades will not sit evenly, reducing their ability to completely clean the glass, which results in streaks.

2. Screeching sounds

If you hear screeching sounds when you turn your wipers on, the rubber on the wiper is uneven and worn out, and the wipers need to be replaced. Do this sooner rather than later because this type of rubber wear could result in the wiper putting micro scratches into your windshield.

3. Change in season

As a rule of thumb, you should change your wipers every 6 to 12 months. However, if there is a sudden change in season (such as a big snowfall or a hail storm), you should change them as soon as possible.

Changing your windshield wipers should be a regular step in your vehicle’s maintenance schedule. If you have any questions about vehicle maintenance, give us a call today at (630) 526-7117.
